July 27, 2019
Kolkata is a feeling, it’s so much more than a place.
The city’s heart beats with culture, sports and good food. Tradition and modernization walk together in sync here and the city revels in its glory. In my last two articles on my beloved city, I wrote about the most beautiful places to visit here. You can read about them on these links, Day One Tour Diary and Day Two Tour Diary.
In this article we will see some other wonderful destinations in Kolkata. Hope you guys have as much of an amazing time on this journey with me.
Places to Visit –
We started the day at the Saint Paul’s Cathedral.
Located at the heart of the city, the cathedral is a magnificent colonial style structure. The white walls, the coloured glass windows and the Indo-Gothic architecture makes this place one of the most visited ones on a trip to Kolkata.
The mass halls and the altar is peaceful and one can enjoy a little slice of solitude here. The gardens are well maintained and the complex also comprises of a library and some museum artifacts. During Christmas the region lights up like a Christmas tree and comes alive. It’s a must visit place when you are in Kolkata.
Next destination was the Rabindra Sarovar Lake.
It’s a natural beauty, being as popular with the locals as with the tourists. At the center is the huge lake that’s surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, walking trails and parks. Early mornings and evenings see a lot of people jogging, running or walking around the lake area. One can lazily sip tea or coffee staring out at the beautiful lake.
You can spot some birds also during the season. It’s another of the most visited places in Kolkata. So when you are here, plan a trip out to the naturally amazing lake side.
Shopping Malls –
Kolkata has a wide collection of shopping malls. Large, gorgeous and comprising of a lot world renowned brands – the shopping malls in Kolkata are wonderful weekend outings. Whether you buy something every time you visit or not, people visit these places to rewind, hang out with friends and just enjoy some coffee or shakes or maybe a sumptuous lunch / dinner at the famous restaurants housed in these malls.
The fantastic Quest Mall comprising the most number of world famous brands and the magnificent South City Mall which is my favourite. I used to hang out here on many of my weekends. Then there are the Forum mall, Mani Square, Swabhumi, Metropolis mall and one of the newest additions Acropolis Mall.
There is also the Avani Riverside Mall, the only shopping mall that is situated by the river Ganges (Hooghly river as it’s known here). Head out to any of these malls, do some shopping and just hang out with your loved ones.
Kolkata has some very gorgeous parks, where one can see a lot of greenery, soothing lawns, exotic and colourful flowers. The Salt Lake Central Park, Elliot Park, Nature Park are some of the beautiful natural parks where you can relax, unwind and laze around in the lap of mother nature.
There are some fabulous amusement parks here like Nicco Park and Aquatica, where you can enjoy a lot of thrilling rides both terrestrial and aquatic. Families and groups usually always love these parks.
Last but not the least, there is Eco Park.
This fantastic place requires special mention because this encompasses a lot of sections. So you have a portion where the seven wonders of the world are displayed, there are glamourous gardens like the Rose garden and Mist garden, there are cycling alleys, walking trails, there is a toy train chugging along here, parts which show case the indigenous handicrafts and artisan work of West Bengal, at the heart of this park is a huge lake on which there is a man made island.
On this island there are some bungalows and restaurants, you can also enjoy your lunch on a houseboat here. There are other beautiful pieces also – a musical fountain, a Bengali style market selling Bengal’s unique art work, a Butterfly park, Tea garden etc. One can spend the most fantastic time here, so when you visit the city make sure you come to this place.
As we wrap up the journey through my beloved city, I hope that you have enjoyed reading about these places as much as I have in visiting them. When you are in the city, I hope that you will make time to come to these amazing destinations.
